In the personal finance and investing new roundup this week:

-Returns on tax-free cash Individual Savings Accounts, ISAs, have fallen to their lowest level since comparable records began in 2011.

-New Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has called for inheritance tax charges to be graded, because the current single rate of 40% means the “very richest become richer”.

-Pensions Minister Baroness Altmann has reportedly said she considered helping women who have had the start date of their state pension put back twice, but could not find a way to do so.

-The International Monetary Fund has warned that financial markets face a higher risk of liquidity squeezes in a sell-off due to the effects of the long period of low interest rates.

-HM Revenue & Customs have confirmed that new transitional protection for pension savers affected by the reduction in the lifetime allowance next April will not be available until next April at the earliest.

-Global investment markets have experienced their worst quarter in four years, at the end of September.

Interview

Dr Peter Westaway, VanguardMartin spoke to Dr Peter Westaway, Chief Economist for Vanguard Asset Management

Peter’s role involves meeting with clients and writing articles to provide Vanguard’s perspective on economic issues and longer-term investment strategy implications.

He has a PhD in Economics from the University of Cambridge, where he studied in a team led by Nobel prize winner James Meade, and is a visiting professor at Queen Mary College, London.

Martin heard Peter speak at an economic environment webinar last week, so invited him onto the podcast for a chat on the same subject – should investors keep calm and carry on?
